baghdad has been pretty quiet as of late. most of the insurgent terrorists have fled the city due to the new security plan and while this creates challenges for surrounding communities, the one step at a time approach seems to be working.

people may have to go through a lot more check points but being able to do so without harm is well worth it.

viewing the bombed out palace

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037969097879818562" style="DISPLAY: block; "believer's palace" still stands; at least you imagine a whole building as the walls are standing but go inside and you realize just how devastating an american bomb can be.

the interior of the palace was in complete ruin. in what was probably a great hall with a domed rotunda we witnessed the small whole where the laser guided bomb made it's grand entrance and then realized the rubble beneath where it detonated. this was a working palace the moment it was hit. but the guts of the building are just that, guts lying in piles that my group climbed through.

there was a sophisticated bunker in this palace and surrounded by shock absorbers this structure still remains with it carrier air conditioning system in place and its german design proving itself. however the bunker is flooded. it turns out that the german designers did not take into account water pipes imploding and putting the bunker under water; we can only "imagine" what remains trapped in this water grave.

as i walked through the palace i thought to myself that this is where we should take anyone on our "list." we should give them a glimpse of what can happen; even without troops on the ground. but then i realized i rather the world see the freedom and prosperity we enjoy because of our ideals.

job fair in iraq?

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035373350343056610" style="DISPLAY: block; last week he lost both of his legs to a car bomb. each story is horrible and tragic. insurgent terrorists strike without reason and almost prefer the innocent victim.

we have to get to a place where these stories are no more.

i have a nephew that was born just weeks ago and obviously i have yet to hold him. but today i got to hold a little boy that needed some love. if this is the only way i can make a difference in iraq, i am okay with that.

rice visit and new security plan

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033158448593411234" style="DISPLAY: block; you know the one you wish you had taken. i missed one today. as one group of students was filing out of the room, the children were finding their way to the americans in the room to thank them. i was positioned next to navy commander bob collins just as a little boy moved beyond the typical handshake for a hug. while the camera missed the shot, the image will be etched in my memory.

this is why we are here.

loss of a treasure...

it has been a rough few weeks here in iraq the members of the prt work long hours each day of the week, meeting with iraqi elected officials, iraqi judges, health care providers, all in an effort to provide iraqis with the basis from which they can decided how to manage their institutions and government.

while some of this work is dangerous for americans it is more so for iraqis. and this is exactly what motivates the staff to keep working; they find inspiration in the dedication of iraqis. these are people that face kidnapping or death simply for meeting with americans but these streets belong to them and they have a vision of a better future and are sacrificing themselves to realize the vision.

but the schedule is often not your own and we had to head back to baghdad early. wednesday in baghdad the fiance of another reporter, an american working to promote democracy, was killed when her car was ambushed. as the reporter traveling with me was the bureau chief, he had to get back to take care of his team. due to the loss it has been a tough few days for many who both knew the woman and her fiance well.

this is iraq. great potential and dedicated workers forced to contend with unfair and meaningless death and murder. this is what will have to change if iraq is to see a new day of freedom and democracy.

still clicking

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; and doubt i will before i head out in march. when i took this job i remember my boss saying something along the lines of "hell freezes over," so i knew it would get colder here than my western mind could imagine the desert to be like. this morning i learned that iraq is having one of the colder winters of recent history.

now colder to someone in iraq is a high around 50 degrees and lows in the 30s so those of you in the northern u.s. may see that as resort temperatures but it really is cold i swear. for example our trailers have shared bathrooms and when the rooms are heated (by a noisy window unit) the common space or bathrooms are not. you can move pretty quickly in the morning when you are shivering! of course it beats having to leave the trailer and walk to the shower.

just monday about 50 or so people (mostly military who had not been out partying the night before) took the polar plunge in the palace pool. brave souls. yes it looks inviting and refreshing but when we put the pool in context with the weather things change.

while this post is fairly meaningless the one thing we should take away from it is that iraq is not hot year round and winter nights and mornings can be pretty cold. so when planning travel to iraq i suggest mid spring...

a new year, a new day in iraq

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I stuck with the lobster and turkey with stuffing, mac and cheese and a cup of eggnog. but it gets better; i took my meal out to the pool for a little poolside, sun warming christmas lunch.

the best part is that i didn't have to clean up a thing.

so that is christmas in baghdad. i find myself now in my trailer and it is a little after 9:00pm, the heater is on and i am ready to curl up with a good book and hit the hay before another work day tomorrow. as our security team says, "feliz navidad" be blessed this christmas.

history can be boring

now i am not talking about ancient athenian history or other classes you take in college. i am talking about real live history in the making; the sort of thing you witness up close and personal.

i am always telling my friends to make history but i rarely tell them to just sit there and be part of history. yesterday that is exactly what i did. along with a few colleagues from the public affairs sections i arrived to the baghdad convention center bright and early to be transported to the saddam trial, a trial that i would watch live and in person all day.

of course this is not the first saddam trial. the first one ended months ago and resulted in his death sentence, but until that is carried out (after appeal) saddam has to face the court with other defendants (chemical ali being one) for other charges. this case involves the anfal massacre where kurds were slaughtered under the guise of the iranian war.

saddam looks like you would imagine from the television. he is very sullen and cold. you almost feel sorry for the defendants until you are reminded of the hate that brews inside of them and the record they have accrued.

the trial yesterday though centered on submitting documents proving military orders into the record. unlike the american court system here defendants have an opportunity to speak on there own behalf and they did just that until 6:30pm.

i would like to say that my arabic is so good that i had no need of a translator but thankfully the court had headsets available and the chairs where quite comfortable. i assure you that everyone in my group took at least one nap during the day!

so that was history. saddam spoke once and for only a brief moment. but there he was, the deposed dictator in a cage 30 feet from me. it is history and it was boring.

Toys for Iraqi Tots

Where there are Marines, there is Toys for Tots and Baghdad is no exception. I left the States late Friday night and had a couple of hours waiting in lines in Paris before heading to Amman, Jordan. Thankfully I had a colleague to travel with.

Once in Amman things started to get interesting. Flashback to two weeks ago when a Jordanian friend of mine asked me if I was Lebanese because I looked very Arab. At the time everyone thought it was a funny comment and joked during our training class. But actually being in the Arab world it turns out I really do look Arab - or at least the Jordanian people are trying to convince me. As Diane, she is the colleague, and I made our way to the hotel and around the city as tourists a number of people would come up to us and start speaking to me in Arabic. They would share my look of confusion when I would explain (in English of course) that I did not speak any Arabic. Our waiter even apologized saying he thought I was Arab.

Thankfully in Iraq I look very much like an American (at least so far) and I haven't had to use my Arabic vocabulary, or lack there of.

After the fun in Amman a team of us made our way into Baghdad Sunday into Monday. It has taken a day or two to get settled but I think I have things figured out and have moved into a livable space in the Embassy compound.

The real work is just beginning.

t minus 2

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; in two weeks i will call baghdad home for three months. i have spent months trying to make this moment happen and now it is here. i am truly excited.

last week i had the opportunity to meet with a couple members of the go team (global outreach) and they gave me some great information about my journey and what to expect. it was really kind of funny, i am not hesitant about the work and all i wanted to talk about is what i need to bring and wear while in iraq. this is significant evidence that i am an american; i am more worried about my cargo pants than getting stories! thankfully my team gave me some much needed perspective and i am itching to get to work.

at the team's recommendation i also picked up a digital camcorder. as you can imagine there are a number of things that happen in iraq that simply never get covered my the main stream media (msm - get used to these three letters!) this being the case i am now prepared for some video backup for my still photos. the video quality is certainly not broadcast but for dumping some video on my computer and posting it on youtube.com this little guy will be perfect. i just have to trust all of my friends back home to spread the word and links to videos when something worthwhile is posted.

security training starts wednesday and then the going away party is friday, then i go away...

what i will miss

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
